Young child using a smartphone unsupervised, highlighting the risks of standard phones for children

Standard smartphones aren't designed for children

Most phones give children unrestricted access to social media, addictive apps and harmful content. Parental controls are easy to bypass and hard to manage. Sayph is different: not a smartphone with controls bolted on, but a phone built to be safe from the ground up — so you can say yes to a first phone without saying yes to social media.

  • No app store — nothing risky by default
  • No social media or addictive content
  • Built-in safety that children can't disable
  • Full parental visibility via the Sayph portal
See All Features

Everything a child needs. Nothing they don't.

Sayph puts parents in control. No unsafe apps. You decide who they can contact, and set times when the phone works.

Parent-approved contacts only

Only numbers you approve can call or message this phone. No calls from unknown users.

No social media. No app store.

Nothing risky or addictive, by default. Addictive apps have no place in childhood, but this shouldn't make your child stand out.

Real-time location

See where they are in real time, to maintain your peace of mind. Always know they're safe.

Tough to crack

With no app store, no default browser and parent-only installs, Sayph is much harder to circumvent than standard parental controls.

Safer photos & messages

Select which contacts can exchange photo messages with your child. If unsure, these are blocked by default.

Hassle free management

No juggling parental controls to keep the device safe. Our message monitoring will alert you to anything that might need your attention.

“Overprotection in the real world and underprotection in the virtual world are the major reasons why children born after 1995 became the anxious generation.”

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about Sayph.

8 to 16. Like Smartphone Free Childhood, we believe that in an ideal world children wouldn’t need phones at all — and that holding off for as long as you can is the right instinct. But when the time comes for your child to stay in touch and have a little independence, that first phone shouldn’t be an open smartphone. Sayph lets you say yes to calls, texts and knowing where they are, without saying yes to social media, an app store or the open internet.

No. Unlike some options (like a standard smartphone with parental controls), we have reconfigured the phone's operating system to be naturally safe and restrictive. Only by adding third party apps would the phone become less safe, so we will carefully screen apps before making them available for parents and carers to download.

No. We've heard too many stories about what happens when children are allowed to roam free on social media, and honestly, we don't believe the big tech firms can be trusted to safeguard our children. The tech firms have themselves chosen 13 as the age when they want children to start using their products. We believe if governments were serious about prioritising children's mental health and wellbeing, they would ban social media use before 16.

We are working on a Sayph browser that will allow safer internet browsing, with filtering & monitoring available via the Sayph Space parent portal. When we do introduce our browser, it will still be possible to exclude it from your child's phone, keeping them off the internet entirely.

We believe that safe phones should be available to all children, so have worked hard to keep the costs low. The 4G Sayph Phone is available to buy now for £189. Monthly subscription from £4.99/month. You will just then need a SIM & call plan (available from £2–3/month).

Parents can select which contacts are approved for exchanging MMS (picture messages) with. This is to reduce the risk of children and young people either being sent images they don't want to see, or pressured into sending something they shouldn't. We are working to develop a system that allows safe and effective monitoring of MMS images, so we can enable safe photo sharing.

The Sayph phone works with any standard UK SIM card, including cheaper talk-and-text-only plans. You buy the SIM yourself from any provider – Sayph does not sell SIMs. You can use a SIM you already have or pick up a low-cost plan from providers like Smarty, Giffgaff, or Tesco Mobile. We recommend looking for plans that include MMS messages, as these can be costly on some networks. For example, Smarty SIM-only plans start from around £2–3/month and include MMS as standard. The Sayph phone uses a nano-SIM and supports all major UK networks (EE, Three, O2, Vodafone and their MVNOs).

Calls and texts work on any SIM. However, live location tracking, remote monitoring and online maps need a mobile data connection to work when your child is away from WiFi. With a talk-and-text-only SIM, these features update only when the phone reconnects to WiFi, and maps work only for areas already downloaded over WiFi. If you want reliable location tracking and maps when out and about, choose a SIM with a small data allowance. If you’re happy for those features to work on WiFi only, a talk-and-text-only plan keeps costs down.

Built for childhood, not for scrolling.

Give your child the freedom to call, text, and explore the real world — while you keep them safe from the digital one.
